New member of the DynaMo Scientific Advisory Board

New member

The DynaMo Center is proud to announce that Professor Chris Hawes from Oxford Brookes University has been appointed to the DynaMo Scientific Advisory Board.

Chris Hawes is recognised for his outstanding work in the field of plant science. He is professor of Plant Cell Biology at Oxford Brookes University, leads the Plant Endomembrane Group and is head of the Bioimaging Unit.

Specialist in live cell imaging

Chris Hawes' research programme is on the structure and dynamics of the plant endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus. His group specialises in live cell imaging using fluorescent protein technology and live cell confocal imaging in combination with techniques such as FRET, FLIM and optical trapping.

More recently he has been using a newly installed 3-View serial block face imaging scanning electron microscope to reconstruct the endomembrane system in plant cells.

He is currently vice-president of the Royal Microscopical Society and biological editor of the Journal of Microscopy.

Distinct and complementary expertises

The DynaMo Scientific Advisory Board is comprised of four internationally leading experts within the field of DynaMo's research. All are carefully chosen based on their distinct and complementary expertises.

The main role of board is to act as a 'critical friend' providing advice and recommendations to the Head of Center and the Center Board on scientific, technical and strategic issues related to the center.

Chris Hawes replaces Professor Karl Oparka from University of Edinburgh who served as an Advisory Board member since the inauguration of the center in 2012.

The other members of the DynaMo Scientific Advisory Board are Professor Jonathan Gershenzon, Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology, Jena, Germany; Professor Henrik Vibe Scheller, Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI), Berkeley, USA; and Professor Jesper Velgaard Olsen, NNF Center for Protein Research, University of Copenhagen.
